Something in the Pit

Share story The man told everyone to wait here and stay. Then they obeyed in silence while the building shook. The ground buckled in waves against their legs. The air hung thick with smoke. Everyone covered their heads as dust choked back the screams. A voice boomed beneath ground then something tore through the foundation. A low groan erupted from beneath surface and the pavement cracked. Nobody spoke while it collapsed around the pavement as the rubble. Dust hung in the air thick, with the smell of fire. The ground shook again while rubble cascaded down into the pit. Dust settled along the street as survivors gasped while bracing each together. Two men stumbled forward against the dust. A figure appeared through the dust shifted away. A figure stood upright before them spoke then pointed at the ground. One of the other figure gestured urgently at the crack. Everyone froze as dawned on them. A figure knelt down stiffly near the crack. The dust swirled up from their legs. Something glinted in the rubble below. Everyone backed away.
