Terms

The short of it.

By adding a word you're joining a public, shared story. A few ground rules keep it good.

Acceptance of terms

By using Skein (“the site”) you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

Changes to the terms

We may update these terms. Continuing to use Skein means you accept the current version.

Using Skein

Skein is a free, collaborative word game for personal, non-commercial enjoyment. Each day one shared chapter is written a word at a time and closes at 00:00 UTC — the same instant everywhere, so not your own midnight unless you live on UTC.

Your contributions

When your word joins a chapter it becomes part of a public story anyone can read, and you grant Skein a perpetual, worldwide licence to display, archive, and share it — including in a short video posted to Skein's own social accounts. Contributions are anonymous and can't be withdrawn once a chapter closes.

Acceptable use

Add one word per round. Don't spam, post slurs or hateful content, use bots or automation, or try to hijack, hack, or disrupt the site. We may remove words or block access that break these rules.

Intellectual property

The Skein name, design, and game mechanics belong to Skein. The closed stories are a shared public work; please don't republish the site itself or claim it as your own.

Disclaimer of warranties

Skein is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access, and chapters can't be edited once closed. A chapter is written by strangers, so it may end up somewhere you would not have chosen — nothing in it is our view.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, Skein isn't liable for damages arising from your use of the site, including lost data or service interruptions.

The daily reminder

If you ask for the reminder, Skein mails you once per day — and only after you confirm the address from the first email, so nobody can put you on the list but you. Every one carries an unsubscribe link, and leaving takes one click.

Privacy

There are no accounts and we never ask for your name. What little we do keep — an anonymous per-browser id, a country tally, and any email address you hand over for the daily reminder or a reply — is set out on the privacy page.
